Celebrating Black History Month

Happy Monday!

It's a cold one here in Nashville today. Our city is shut down due to an ongoing ice storm that has been taking place over the last few days. All I have been doing is cooking, eating, and eating some more.

As I've been storing up for winter and preparing for hibernation, I can't help but crave warm, comforting meals. As much as I love to cook and eat at home, there are just some items I can not replicate, no matter how hard I try.

Every now and then, I get an extreme craving for collard greens, black-eyed peas, and classic cornbread, aka soul food. Trust me, I've tried to recreate these marvelous masterpieces, but I just can't get it right. With it being Black History month, I feel it is incredibly important to support black-owned businesses. Some of my favorite spots in Nashville are Gojo, The Southern V, and Vege-Licious

What are some of your favorite comfort foods you just can't live without? What are some of your favorite black-owned restaurants in your area? If you're not sure and like to learn a little bit more, check out the link below to see what black-owned restaurants are near you.

  1. I know what you mean by having comfort food because my black family has some of the best food I’ve ever had in my entire life. From the macaroni and cheese that’s freshly baked to the sweet potatoes they take hours to make. The soul food is unbeatable, and it is food I will never ever get tired of. Especially during the wintertime because wintertime I am inside a lot with my family and we all can bond over eating food and it’s cultural food and some of the best that I will ever have in my life because it taste good and it reminds me of family every time I eat it. I loved this post so please keep making quality ones like this.

  2. Mary,
I couldn't agree more. I cannot wait for the warm weather. I am so sick of the cold and snow, I can't wait for it to be summer time! One of my favorite comfort foods is broccoli cheddar soup. I really love getting this from panera... it is so good! Also I love eating tacos. I'm not living in Mount Pleasant right now and there is this really good Mexican restaurant that I have been missing so much! There is a black owed restaurant in Grand Rapids that just opened up. The girl that opened it up is only 17 years old! She sells huge milkshakes and breakfast items. I plan to try it this weekend!

  3. I have also been doing my best to support black owned businesses this year. There is a girl at CMU in Mount Pleasant that is an amazing cook. She sells street style tacos on Tuesdays. They are AMAZING. I have been recommending her small business to all my friends and now it is a tradition of ours to get our tacos from her every Tuesday she does it.
    Great post!!

  4. I could not agree more soul food is the best. My favorite is mac and cheese. It always fills me up and puts me right to sleep. One black own restaurant I think everyone should visit if there ever visiting Detroit is Kuzzo's Chicken and Waffles. Great post.
